These little bundles of joy are easy to make, require minimal materials, and offer a gift that keeps on giving – beautiful wildflowers!
Sow Some Love: What Are Seed Bombs?
Seed bombs are small balls of clay packed with seeds. When tossed onto the ground or planted, the clay protects the seeds until the conditions are right for germination. Rain breaks down the clay, allowing the seeds to sprout and flourish. These heart-shaped versions are a perfect Valentine’s Day twist, symbolizing love and growth.

What You’ll Need
- Air Dry Clay: About one tablespoon per heart. This acts as the binding agent and protects the seeds.
- Dried Flowers: Pressed into the seed bombs adds beautiful and creative detail to the seed bombs (We used dried yellow yarrow and dried purple Statice flowers) .
- Wildflower Seeds: Choose a mix of native wildflower seeds appropriate for your region. This ensures the best chance of successful growth and supports local ecosystems. You can find wildflower seed mixes at most garden centers or online.
- Bowl: A bowl to contain the seeds makes rolling the clay in the seeds easier and results in less mess
- Silicone Heart-Shaped Candy Molds: These molds will give your seed bombs their adorable heart shape. Make sure you use molds dedicated to crafting and not for food use after this project.
- Tray or Cookie Sheet: Prep a tray or cookie sheet with parchment paper for the seed bombs to dry.

- Prep the Molds: Place one or three dried flowers into the silicone molds. The flowers will get pressed into the clay to create a pretty decoration on the finished seed bombs.
- Prepare the Clay: Take a small amount of air-dry clay (about 1 tablespoon) and soften it by gently kneading it in your hands. You want it to be pliable and easy to work with. If it’s too dry, you can add a tiny drop of water at a time until it reaches the right consistency.
- Mix in the Seeds: Fill the bowl with the wildflower seeds. Roll the softened clay into the bowl of seeds to coat the clay. Gently knead the clay again to distribute the seeds evenly throughout. Don’t over-mix, just ensure the seeds are incorporated.
- Mold the Hearts: Press the clay mixture firmly into the heart-shaped cavities of your silicone mold. Ensure the clay fills each cavity’s circumference completely and evenly. You can gently press down on the back to ensure a flat surface. The mold cavity does not need to be filled to the top entirely. Aim to fill the mold’s cavities to 1/2 t 2/3 of the way full.
- Air Dry: Once the molds are filled, leave them to air dry completely. This can take anywhere from 24-48 hours, depending on the humidity and thickness of the clay. You’ll know they’re ready when they feel hard and dry to the touch. Don’t try to remove them from the molds until they are fully dry, or they might lose their shape.
- Release and Package (Optional): Once dry, gently pop the heart-shaped seed bombs out of the molds. You can package them in small cellophane bags tied with ribbon, in a small gift box for a more polished presentation, or attach them to the printable Valentine’s Card. Add a small tag with planting instructions: “Toss onto bare soil or lightly cover with soil. Water if conditions are dry. Watch your love grow!”

Tips for Success
- Use native wildflower seeds: These are best suited to your local environment and will have the highest chance of success.
- The Clay should be playable but not sticky. If the clay is too dry, add a few drops of water while kneading the clay in your hands.
- Ensure the seed bombs are completely dry before packaging: This will prevent mold growth.
- Consider the planting season: While seed bombs can be gifted year-round, the best time to plant them is in the fall or early spring, depending on your region.
